Dumpster Etiquette

Dumpster Etiquette

The end of the summer season brings longer days, cooler nights and eventually snow.  Fewer of us are up enjoying our cabins and MCSHA cancels the regular garbage service as the dump trucks that collect our garbage can’t negotiate the mountain in the winter.  Yet for the past several years it has also brought dumpsters full of nasty garbage that sat there until we renewed our garbage service in the spring!

There will be a large dumpster provided for the cabin owners during the week of Labor Day.  It will be located near the dumpster site off the highway.  This is for end of season household trash only; please do not include furniture, appliances, electronics or automotive waste (tires, parts, fluids).  Once the dumpster is filled, we ask that no more garbage be left near the dumpsters.

The regular dumpsters will be available and usable for another month, until the snow flies.  It is difficult for the large dump trucks to accessour garbage site once we have had a heavy snow, so we cancel our service in October and it doesn’t resume until April. If you are up during the winter you will have to haul your garbage home with you.  The dumpsters may be left in place during the winter, but they are NOT serviced so whatever goes in during the late fall will still be there during the spring thaw!

So, a couple of things to remember and to share with your visitors.

  1.  Do not leave anything outside the dumpsters.  Garbage is a draw for the local critters and once spread around is unslightly, unhealthy and a general nuisance.
  2. Always close and secure the dumpsters.  Those aforementioned critters are perfectly capable of minor strong arm entrances and the results are the same.
  3. If the dumpsters are really locked or gone or full or there is lots of snow on the ground, you have to haul your gabage home with you.  Sorry about that, but it happens.
  4. This is a service we provide for the summer months.
  5. We’ve had issues in the past with folks leaving bags of rotting food and dirty diapers outside the dumpsters when there is no garbage pick up or when the dumpsters are full.  That leave the clean up to the cabin owners who are within “smell range” to pick up and dispose of the yuck.   This year, let us have NO issues…let us all be responsible neighbors and haul our own yuck out when garbage service isn’t available!
